Booking your Theory Test
You can take your theory test once your provisional licence becomes valid.
Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday, however you can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday. So, if you apply for your provisional licence before you are 17 you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.
Ways To Book Your Test
There are four ways to book your theory test - online, by phone, by fax or by post.
The quickest and easiest way to book your theory test is to use the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) online booking service. When booking online you can choose your test centre, select the time and date of your test, check your test appointment details and change or cancel your test if your circumstances change. To book online you will need a credit or debit card and your driving licence number.
You may prefer to book your test by phone. To do this, you can call the DSA booking and enquiries line on 0300 200 1122 (open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday - except public and bank holidays).
Alternatively you can download, print and return an application form by post (for internet or phone bookings, you do not need to fill in this form.) Details of where to send the completed application are supplied on the second page of the downloaded form. You can also fax the completed application form to the DSA on 0300 200 1177.
You can pay for the theory test by credit or debit card, by cheque or by postal order.
If you have not received any booking confirmation after 10 days you should phone the DSA booking line shown above.
