Driving Skills

To make driving as easy as possible for you as a new pupil, all our instructors are trained to break lessons and information down for you.

There are certain sequences that come up all the time as an aid for you as a pupil to remember. Examples of these sequences are POM and MSPSL.

POM - Prepare, Observe, and Move

Prepare – Making sure your car is in neutral and your handbrake is on, start your engine, clutch in and select 1st gear, then find your biting point by applying a little bit of gas, and slowly easing up your clutch until the engine noise drops;

Observe – Observations are essential in driving. Before moving off you need to make sure that it is safe to do so. The moving off observations start with your left blind spot, left wing mirror, centre interior mirror, straight ahead, right wing mirror, right blind spot;

Move – When you are certain that it is safe to begin moving, you need to release your handbrake, slowly lifting up your clutch a little more, looking over your right blind spot as another safety check, and then steering your wheel over to the right so as your car is a metre away from the kerb, straighten up your wheel, apply a little bit more gas and follow the road ahead.

MSPSL - Mirrors, Signal, Position, Speed, Look

Mirrors – These are used in pairs. Either centre and left, or centre and right depending on which way you are going;

Signal – Using your indicator, signal either left or right to allow other road users know which way you are intending to go;

Position – Make sure you are positioned in the correct place to turn either left or right;

Speed – To remain in control of your car, reduce your speed to a nice, steady, slow pace, just enough so as not to become a hazard or hindrance to other road users;

Look – You need to make sure that you’re looking at the road ahead so as you can see there are no hazards in front of you, and into the road into which you’re turning, again to make sure there are no hazards ensuring that it is safe.
