Your First Lesson With Us

Getting behind the wheel for the first time might seem quite daunting. Don't panic! Your instructor will set you at ease. We're not expecting you to drive onto a busy road the first time you drive.

If you have never driven a car before, your first lesson will mainly be concerned with introducing you to the controls of the car - the main driving controls, dashboard dials, knobs and levers, and what to use them for.

Your instructor will make sure that you are in a quiet road before you actually do any driving for the first time. Initially you'll probably get to have a go at getting the car moving - a few metres down the road and then to a stop. We will focus on one skill at once to build your confidence in each aspect of driving, introducing the various controls of the car in easy-to-manage stages.

Over time you will be able to use all of the controls in combination; this may take a few lessons or longer, but don't worry - our instructors are aware that everybody's confidence and ability grows at different rates, and can tailor your lessons as they monitor your progress.

If you have driven a car before, or are getting back behind the wheel after a period away from driving, your first lesson will involve an initial assessment of your current driving ability and an individual development plan can be agreed with you based on this assessment.

Dual Controls

In case you are worried about the thought of being in control of half a tonne of speeding metal, relax! Your car will be fitted with dual controls. This means that the instructor has a set of pedals on their side of the car that they can use to take over or help you out if you are struggling. If it looks like you’ve lost control for a moment, they can bring the car to a stop quickly and safely, and give you time to recover your poise.
